Our founder, Sumaya, knows the journey firsthand. She fled family violence in the dead of night, pregnant and with two very young children, one with a disability. Homeless and exhausted, she battled a system that often failed her when she needed it most. Sumaya’s personal fight against homelessness and systemic gaps ignited a powerful resolve: to ensure no woman or child ever has to face such a struggle alone. Her tireless advocacy and deep understanding of rehabilitation, honed through her own lived experience and studies, laid the foundation for a program designed to catch those who might otherwise fall. The name “Salams” itself, meaning peace, embodies the peace she fought for, and now seeks to restore for others.
The Survivors’ Journey is dedicated to women and children impacted by domestic abuse, with a specific focus on those from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) and the wider Muslim communities. We understand the unique cultural, linguistic, and systemic barriers these communities often face when trying to access vital support, and our program is tailored to bridge these gaps.
We provide tailored short term or long-term support to guide survivors towards stability and healing:
Immediate assistance to secure safety and stability.
Counseling and specialised support for emotional recovery and personal growth.
Capacity building resources and advocacy to navigate challenges and build independence and a better quality of life.
Direct help for urgent needs, ensuring no one is left behind.
Our application process is handled with complete confidentiality by our Salams Rehabilitation team. We assess each situation to tailor the best support for you.
If you’re experiencing or recovering from domestic violence, apply to the Survivors’ Journey program. Our team offers confidential, compassionate, and culturally sensitive support you don’t have to face this alone.
The Salams Foundation’s “Survivors’ Journey” program is strengthened by the support of our incredible partners. If you’re an individual, company, business, service provider, or organisation, we invite you to collaborate with us in two meaningful ways:
Your financial support directly fuels the “Survivors’ Journey,” enabling us to provide critical resources and impactful services for vulnerable women and children. You can contribute through general donations (Sadaqah) or by utilising your Zakat.
Do you offer services that can uplift and empower survivors? We welcome partnerships that provide essential support such as culturally sensitive counselling, training, or education. Your expertise can provide invaluable tools for healing and rebuilding futures for the women and children in our program.
